As a parent you contemplate where you take your children on vacation all the time.
This decision was a bit harder... do you take your children to a known Nazi Death camp?
After our year Studying WWII, Visiting the beaches of Normandy, Dachau Nazi Work Camp,
and learning a little about Anne Frank ... We decided our kids were mature enough to handle the
heavy subject matter.
They actually move you so quickly through each area on the tour~ you don't have the opportunity to
really dwell on the enormity & sadness.
The children had the option to opt out of any part of the tour, they didn't feel comfortable with.
They both chose not to go into the rooms that had pictures of the children of the holocaust.
They did chose to see all other parts of the tour. The children photos show children clearly starved.
I chose not to photograph that. It was very sad~ So sad it almost seems unreal.
Outer area
Main Gate - Same saying as Dachau "Work Makes Free"
Inside the gates
Up to 1000 people per building.
Collected Ashes Monument
Cans of poison
Eye Glases
Kitchen item
Luggage - They all thought they were being taken to a better place.
All their most important things were brought in their bags.
Childrens Shoes
Looking from one end to the other of the double sided shoe room.
Each window set filled like this....
This is how many of them slept.
Or if you were "lucky" 2 to a bed here.
Prison Basement
Inside of a confinement cell
Memorial flag
Execution wall
Stones left in remembrance.
Hangings
Hitlers Home- Just outside the gates.
Gas Chamber
Ovens
Its truly hard to really grasp the severity of this. Even as you walk the grounds here.
When you have a fairly decent heart towards others you can't really fathom -
How or Why someone could be so evil.
Afterwards we drove on to the city of Krakow and walked to downtown for dinner.
It is a beautiful and relaxing city!
Walking to dinner - Wawel Castle
~Dinner~
